Commission adopts GDOT-backed speed reductions on key state routes in Decatur

Kara Sharer, assistant city manager of public works, summarized the ordinance and said it reflects changes proposed by GDOT’s office of traffic operations: among the changes she read were State Route 10 (College Avenue) from 35 to 30 mph and State Route 8 (Scott Boulevard) from 40 to 35 mph.
Sharer said the changes follow a pedestrian safety study and will require GDOT to update its GPAS system and replace signage; commissioners discussed public outreach, use of electronic message boards and an enforcement plan while signage is changed.
Motion and vote: the commission moved to adopt Ordinance O-25-XX. The clerk conducted a roll-call recorded as aye votes and the ordinance was adopted.
What’s next: staff said they will work with GDOT on signage changes, update GPAS, and coordinate public education and enforcement plans so drivers are not caught unaware by the lower posted limits.
