J. M. Davis Museum seeks $2.5 million for Route 66-era exterior renovations

Director Raymer, representing the J. M. Davis Museum in Claremore, asked the committee to consider a $2.5 million capital appropriation to support exterior renovations and the first stages of a multi-year gallery update aimed at boosting tourism.
"We're asking for this large sum of $2,500,000," Raymer said, adding the museum had already raised $1,100,000 and aims to reach a $5 million goal through continued fundraising and a capital campaign. Raymer described the building as structurally sound but cosmetically dated and said exterior improvements would enhance the museum’s online presentation and curb appeal.
He proposed spreading the state request over two fiscal years ($1.25 million each year) and said some exterior work would be completed in time for the Route 66 centennial kickoff planned for April and May. Interior gallery renovations would be staged over approximately three years and reuse existing casework to limit costs.
When asked whether renovations would force a prolonged closure, Raymer said the interior work would be staged to keep at least one entrance open, and he confirmed the state holds title to the building.
Raymer framed the request as an investment in tourism and community use: planned changes include a larger gift shop, improved lighting and flooring, and a public gathering space the museum can rent for events that also generate revenue.
The committee did not vote on the request at this meeting. Staff follow-up was requested on timelines and matching fundraising progress.
