Commission OKs $35,919 design change to avoid 33 burials found at Legacy Park

The Decatur City Commission on Aug. 4 approved Change Order No. 1 to AECOM for $35,919 to redesign the northern portion of the South Columbia multi-use path after ground-penetrating radar identified 33 separate burials in the project area.
Assistant Public Works Manager Tara Shearer told the commission the redesign would pivot the alignment to run more along the road frontage of Legacy Park and tie back into the existing path to avoid disturbing the burial area. "Updates were given on the June 2 and June 16 reports ... where ground penetrating radar results indicated 33 separate burials were identified at the northern portion of Legacy Park," Shearer said.
Shearer said the change order will cover design revisions and incorporation of stormwater improvements and that funding for the change order is available within the project's established $2,100,000 construction budget. She added staff anticipates about 90 days to finalize plans before submitting for state erosion-control approval and that it is unclear whether the construction schedule will be extended.
Commissioners asked staff to consider impacts to an active MARTA bus stop and to ensure waiting areas are preserved in the revised alignment. The motion to approve the change order and contract amount update was made, seconded and adopted.
