Decatur approves $65,000 project budget to relocate school-zone speed camera

The Decatur City Commission on Aug. 4 approved a task order with Atkins Realis for up to $56,500 and established a $65,000 project budget to relocate a school-zone automated speed-enforcement camera and related equipment along Claremont Avenue.
"Relocating this school zone speed enforcement equipment from the pedestrian pathway will maximize what is a limited space for vulnerable road users," a staff presenter said, outlining an engineering and traffic investigation to be completed in accordance with Georgia Department of Transportation policy for automated traffic-enforcement devices.
Staff described a multi-step process that will require GDOT review and issuance of a special encroachment permit, and coordination with Georgia Power for new electrical service for flashing lights and signage. Officials estimated GDOT could take approximately six to eight weeks to complete its review; staff said, "I would say to be somewhat pessimistic, it would be next school year" before the relocation is fully in place.
Commissioners asked about timeline and coordination with other projects in the area, including a stormwater project and the citys SS4SA streets list. One commissioner urged using the project as a template for future camera siting decisions to avoid repeat relocations; another said the camera may have to remain functional in its current location until the relocation is fully permitted and powered.
The motion to approve the task order and budget was made, seconded and approved by the commission.
