Residents and an Environment & Sustainability working group urged the City Commission on Jan. 21 to advance changes to Decatur’s noise ordinance to address daytime noise that affects telework, sleep and quality of life.
Mike Barsick and Peter Lindsay described a community process that produced draft daytime‑noise standards using decibel thresholds and referenced a Georgia State study and public surveys supporting the change. Lindsay said previous efforts stalled after staff turnover; Barsick and other neighbors asked the commission not to let the issue "die on the vine."
Public‑works staff told commissioners the draft ordinance is substantially developed but remains under final review by the city attorney after a transition in the legal office, and staff expects to present it for commission deliberation soon. Langston Leek said the city made minor edits based on public‑safety and community‑development feedback, and the pending attorney review is the last puzzle piece.
Commissioners expressed broad support for returning the ordinance for discussion; several asked staff to move it forward promptly. No vote was taken on Jan. 21.
