Senator Weaver introduced SP66 on behalf of the University of Montevallo, saying the university's board has approved a ‘‘cleanup’’ bill that would shorten trustee terms from 12 years to eight years, impose a two-term limit and remove the requirement that the president be an educator.
Committee members asked no substantive questions about the proposed governance changes. Senator Stutz moved a favorable report, and Senator Smitherman seconded. The clerk conducted a roll call during which members present recorded ‘aye’ votes; the committee gave the bill a favorable report by a 9–0 vote.
The bill was presented as noncontroversial and supported by the institution’s board. There was no floor debate in committee and no recorded objections from members. The committee’s favorable report advances SP66 toward further consideration in the full Senate.
