Gage County sheriff's office rolling out Axon body and fleet cameras; training, plate readers included

The Gage County Sheriff's Office is in the process of deploying new Axon body-worn cameras and in-car (fleet) systems, Deputy John Chavez told the Board of Supervisors on Nov. 12.
Chavez said the agency received all body-worn camera units and fleet cameras; body cameras are already issued and operating in the field. He said Axon will send a team to install the in-car systems and estimated about three to four days per unit with a projected completion in December. "They will be here until it's done," Chavez said, adding that the vendor will not leave until equipment is working and that training will be provided.
The deputy confirmed the county will also have automatic license-plate readers and that camera data will integrate with the department’s existing systems and hot-list sharing with neighboring agencies. Chavez said the evidence-management and sharing process with county attorneys and partner agencies will improve evidence integrity.
Supervisors praised staff coordination and grant support for related projects; they noted remaining items including e-citations software that require follow-up. Board members said training and interoperability are priorities and thanked deputies and staff for the work to implement the equipment.
No policy change or budget vote on equipment purchase was taken at the meeting; Chavez said training would be led internally and with Axon support as part of the rollout schedule.
