Mendon youth council reports wreaths fundraiser and Legacy Park flex-field plan

The Mendon youth council updated the city council on recent volunteer activities and fundraising and outlined next steps for Legacy Park.

A youth council member said volunteers helped at a November food pantry (17 participants, about two hours) and staffed a community Christmas breakfast in December with about 20 youth serving roughly 80 people. The member also described the youth role in Wreaths Across America and other youth activities.

Nicole Norris, who identified herself as the youth council’s adult adviser, told the council that the city had received contract samples from a soccer association interested in building the park’s flex field. "Basically, it is a collaboration where they will build the part or the flex field and facility there," Norris said, adding that the association typically secures multi‑year priority scheduling and that any agreement would require city council and city attorney approval.

Laura Hamilton summarized the Wreaths Across America effort, reporting 165 wreaths sold (about 162 placed at the local cemetery and four sent to a nearby community). She said youth council volunteers sold 92 wreaths in roughly two weeks and that the youth council would receive about $475 to spend on Legacy Park or other youth activities.

Why it matters: the fundraiser both honored veterans and generated modest funds for youth programming, while the soccer association’s proposal could accelerate construction of Legacy Park’s phase 2 if the council approves a formal contract.

Council members asked for the soccer-association numbers Jamie holds and signaled they would review any proposed agreement with the city attorney before any signature. No formal action was taken during the meeting.
