Eureka Council adopts city design standards, approves hourly consultant contract

The Eureka City Council voted Oct. 27 to adopt new city design standards intended to standardize road cross-sections, utility locations and other requirements for new development. Shay Morrison presented the draft, saying it sets consistent expectations for local streets, alleys and collector roads and will help the planning and zoning commission apply uniform rules.
Morrison told the council the recommended engagement is an hourly contract so the city pays only for actual time spent. He said the original proposed rate was $67.50 per hour and that unused budget would not be billed to the city. The arrangement, he said, allows the city to request additional details if funds remain after initial tasks are completed.
A council member moved to accept the proposal; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Council members thanked Morrison and asked staff to coordinate follow-up items, including scheduling related transportation planning meetings.
The council directed staff to bring a written contract and any final procedural language back for recordation and implementation at a later meeting.
