North Logan council adopts 5% solid-waste fee increase tied to contract CPI

The North Logan City Council approved a resolution Dec. 10 to update the city’s master fee schedule for solid-waste collection to reflect an automatic contract increase tied to a solid-waste Consumer Price Index.

The change stems from the city’s contract with its solid-waste provider, which includes an annual CPI adjustment specific to solid waste. “This year, that was, 5%,” a city official said while opening the public hearing. The council voted in favor after the public comment period.

At the hearing, a resident identified as Lee said he did not object to an increase but asked the city to renegotiate pickup timing so green-can/yard-waste collection runs later in the season, into December, to better serve older neighborhoods with significant tree debris. “I really don’t mind, nor does my wife, paying for goods and services that are needed,” Lee said, adding that he would like the green-can pickup extended.

Council members said they would seek comparative quotes and cost comparisons as requested by the public, but emphasized that the current adjustment follows contract terms and that the selected provider did not include a separate fuel surcharge that several other bidders had proposed.

The motion to amend the master fee schedule was moved by Joni Karchner and seconded by Buzzy; the council approved the resolution by voice vote.

Next steps: the fee change as adopted updates the master fee schedule; council members said they would pursue comparative cost information and may revisit pickup timing in future service negotiations.
