The Duchesne County Planning Commission granted a front-yard setback variance for the Altamont Rodeo Grounds on June 4, allowing commercial arena structures and bleachers to be sited up to the county road right-of-way.
Staff explained the request from the Upper Duchesne Recreation District sought relief from the code’s 30-foot front-yard requirement to allow a full-size arena, corrals and stands in a narrow buildable area. Staff concluded the parcel’s historic use as rodeo grounds and the practical constraints of the site met the county’s variance standards and recommended approval.
Commissioners asked about impacts to utilities and emergency access; staff said utilities are in place on the site’s east side and that the variance would not reduce access for emergency responders. The commission moved, seconded and approved the variance by voice vote.
Applicant representatives said the variance is necessary to obtain building permits and to proceed with construction and anticipated using the upgraded arena for next season if permitting is finalized.
