CDRA debates park lighting design and maintenance risks for decorative fixtures

Park lighting design and funding drew sustained discussion at the Mount Pleasant CDRA meeting.
Members reviewed a design allocation of $7,800 for light poles and questioned whether that amount would cover installation or only design. Speaker 3 said the $7,800 was for design and estimated material costs near $45,000 if boulders are removed from the plan. “I think right now, if we take the boulders out of that, we’ll probably close to, 45,000,” Speaker 3 said.
Several members cautioned against decorative bollards and low housings. Speaker 1 warned these fixtures could be “a maintenance nightmare,” saying the aluminum housings at the hospital had repeatedly broken and were difficult to service: “The light bulbs in there got to the point we couldn’t change light bulbs… breaking their aluminum housings.” Members discussed options including a single larger street light with a return arm to illuminate the park and using in-kind contributions from the power department or heritage funds to reduce cash outlays.
The board asked staff to refine cost estimates, clarify whether the $7,800 is design-only, and return with options that balance durability, maintenance burden and aesthetics. Discussion also included coverage considerations for security cameras as part of the park plan.
