Oakley council approves $808 to support Wreaths Across America

Ennis Gibbs, a local veteran who coordinates Wreaths Across America activities in the valley, asked Oakley City Council for $808 in support of the program and outlined how the funds would be used.
Gibbs told the council the program honors veterans buried in area cemeteries and also works to bring living veterans to ceremonies. He said his group covered 445 veterans’ graves in the valley last year and that the requested $808 would be divided into $500 for wreaths for veterans without family, $136 for an eight-wreath ceremonial display representing military branches, and $36 for small flags.
Mayor (unnamed) recommended council honor the request; a motion was made and the council approved the funding by voice vote.
Gibbs invited council members and the public to the annual ceremony, scheduled for Dec. 13 (the third Saturday in December), and thanked volunteers and local donors. Council members expressed appreciation for the presentation and the city agreed to fund the modest request.
The council did not attach conditions to the funding and did not specify whether the money will be drawn from general fund discretionary dollars or a specific donation line; staff follow-up to record the payment and disbursement was implied by the approval.
The council moved on to the rest of the evening’s agenda.
