Hyde Park Adopts Generative AI Policy for City Staff, Requires Training and Human Review

Hyde Park — On Dec. 10, Hyde Park City Council adopted a generative artificial-intelligence policy for city staff that establishes training, an approved-program list, and mandatory human review of AI-generated materials before public release.
Marcus presented the draft policy, saying it was developed with the city attorney and aims to limit misinformation, copyright violations and improper handling of sensitive personal data. "All the trainings that I've been to say that a city should have a policy in place because of all the misinformation that can happen with AI," Marcus told the council.
The policy requires annual training for employees who use AI, written approval to use particular tools, and checkpoints so outputs are reviewed by a human before they are published or issued as public-facing communications. Councilmembers asked whether approvals would be one-time for a given use; staff clarified approvals are intended to be for a particular type of work or tool and will be documented.
Councilmember Stephanie moved to adopt the generative AI policy; Daryl seconded and the council approved the motion 3-0.
Staff said they will maintain a list of approved programs, require documented approvals for new tools and keep a record of training completion.
