Washington Terrace adopts Wildland Urban Interface code tied to House Bill 48

Washington Terrace — The City Council approved Ordinance 25-06 on adoption of the Wildland Urban Interface Code after a presentation from the fire chief linking the measure to House Bill 48 and mapped high-risk areas in the southern part of the city.
Fire Chief Clay told the council the code implements state-mandated standards for building in wildland-urban interface zones and helps maintain eligibility for federal and state wildfire response and mitigation support. "This is because of House Bill 48," Clay said, describing a map that identifies pockets of higher hazard near Romer and the 4800 South area.
Council moved and seconded the ordinance and the city recorder called the roll for approval. Council responses recorded the item as carried; Councilman West, Rosemary McCallum and Council member Christian were among those recorded voting yes during the roll call.
Council discussion focused on the geographic areas covered by the map and administrative steps staff must take after adoption, including annual documentation on hazard-reduction work to maintain eligibility for assistance from the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and state agencies. The chief explained those submittals and past vegetation management activities that support federal response in the event of a wildfire.
The ordinance will be entered into the city's code as Ordinance 25-06; staff will follow through with the required reporting and documentation to state and federal partners. The council did not amend the ordinance during the meeting.
