Bryce Canyon City council approves town funding to keep officer Tiffany full time

At its meeting, the Bryce Canyon City Council voted to cover wages so a local officer known as Tiffany can move to a full‑time schedule, approving staff to draft a contract for the arrangement.

The action followed a presentation by Sheriff Houseman, who told the council that after the retirement of Clint Pearson the department has struggled to fill a regular shift locally. "Tiffany really helps bring us a lot closer to that," Sheriff Houseman said, adding that she "has a ton of experience" and that he has not received complaints about her work.

Sheriff Houseman described budget and staffing constraints: he said a fully funded officer costs the county roughly $152,000 to $160,000 a year, and estimated the town’s share to support Tiffany at $93,270 annually. He told the council the county will continue to provide equipment, training and a vehicle, and that the town’s funding would cover wages and benefits. He said Tiffany currently covers only two to three days a month locally and that the proposal would have her working five days a week, eight hours a day.

Councilmembers discussed contract length and contingency planning if Tiffany were to leave. Speaker 1 noted the council could structure the arrangement for one to three years; Speaker 3 said the contract could be canceled if Tiffany left. Jean Tanner volunteered to help with coordination once the contract is prepared.

Council approved the motion to move forward with the funding and asked staff to prepare and circulate a contract, conducting the decision by voice vote.
