Several meeting participants reported an animal-dumping incident in Buckhorn Draw (San Rafael area) discovered by tourists on April 23. Speaker 4 said visitors found crates and that approximately 12 dogs had been captured by volunteers and trusted trappers; some dogs were moved initially to Carbon County and others to Best Friends for fostering and adoption.
"They were discovered, it says, April 23...they caught 12 of them," Speaker 4 said, summarizing the initial field response. Participants said some dogs were semi-wild and nervous, requiring traps and the assistance of an organization experienced with skittish animals to capture the last dog.
Speakers discussed the need to review trail-camera footage to determine who dumped the animals; Speaker 7 said crates were found in the Buckhorn area and that staff had not yet pulled cameras because of other workload priorities. Participants described volunteers changing their plans to focus on capturing and caring for the animals and noted continued trapping activity the week after discovery.
Speakers said the situation was being managed by local volunteers, trusted trappers and animal-welfare organizations, but the group had not confirmed whether all dogs were accounted for or whether authorities had identified the person(s) responsible. The meeting recorded an ongoing effort to check camera footage and continue trapping, and participants emphasized distribution of captured animals to shelter and foster networks while an investigation remained open.
