The Finance Committee authorized the city manager to accept federal grants for runway rehabilitation and approved placing the related appropriation on first reading at the full council so the city can begin drawing down the funds.
An airport presenter asked the committee to accept $15,285,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration and what was described in the meeting as "just under $1,100,000" from the Department of Transportation. Staff explained the timing required acceptance before two full council readings and unfinished business to avoid losing the funding.
The presenter described two separate federal programs that could be used for runway work: one program accounting for about $15 million and a discretionary program described as around $8 million that would be packaged after entitlement allocations are determined. The presenter said both streams would feed runway rehabilitation but that they are administered differently.
A motion to authorize acceptance of the funds and to place an order to appropriate the money on first reading was made and seconded; the committee approved both motions with no objection. The acceptance enables the city manager and city legal staff to sign documentation accepting the grants; the appropriation will return to the council for final action at a later meeting.
