Committee advances SB719 to extend state reporting on automated decision systems

The Senate Committee on Governmental Organization advanced SB719 after the bill’s author asked the committee to extend the reporting window for oversight of automated decision systems used in state government.
Senator Cabaldon told the committee current law requires the State Department of Technology to report on use of high‑risk automated decision systems; prior reports due in 2020 and 2024 showed no recorded use but the rapid advancement of such systems means continued monitoring is prudent. SB719 would extend the statutory reporting window by a couple of years so lawmakers can ‘‘learn’’ how the systems are working and what state agencies are doing.
"The point of the window through 2029 for these reports was for us to learn," the author said, noting that the initial reports showed no use recorded but that future reports could reveal changes.
There were no witnesses in opposition or testimony sought; a motion to move the bill was made, and the committee recorded a do‑pass referral to the Judiciary Committee. The committee placed the item on call.
