Anchorage committee reports new work boat in service, seeks slips and works derelict‑vessel removals

Curtis Ludwig, marine operations lead, told the Anchorage Advisory Committee on Jan. 26 that the town’s recently christened work boat is “in full service” and is already being used for debris removal and environmental runs. He said an enforcement boat that had been stolen was reclaimed, had engine parts and fuel lines replaced, and was returned to service last week.
Curtis said mooring occupancy has risen, with the first and second fields nearly full and additional vessels moving into the third field near Salty Sam’s. He described ongoing work with the U.S. Coast Guard’s construction tender Anvil to reestablish mooring balls 4–9 and adjust channel markers so vessel swing radii do not impede navigation.
On derelict vessels, Curtis described a recent storm that produced about 50‑knot winds, caused mooring lines to part and left one vessel grounded outside Snook Bite. That vessel has been tagged and is moving through the derelict‑vessel process. “They are holding the owners accountable now for these vessels,” Curtis said, adding that recovery can take many months and involves legal steps and coordination with FWC and the Coast Guard.
Committee members also discussed base location options for enforcement operations; Curtis said staff are negotiating with Walker’s Cay for a wet slip to station the enforcement boat on the south end.
The committee did not take formal action on enforcement policy at the meeting; Curtis said he will continue coordination with FWC and the Coast Guard and expects further updates at future meetings.
