Wasatch school district names new high school 'Deer Creek' and selects 'Riverhawks' mascot

Principal Brett Zabel presented the survey results: in the initial name vote Deer Creek received 50.5% and was the top vote-getter. For the mascot, Riverhawks led but did not reach 50% in the first round; district staff eliminated the lowest vote-getter, reallocated second-choice votes, and repeated the process until Riverhawks achieved a final total of 52.1% and became the selected mascot.
Zabel said all votes were counted and reallocated methodically so no ballots were lost in the transfer. Board members noted broad outreach to students, teachers, parents and community members via email and social media to collect votes and said the outcome reflects consistent preferences across stakeholder groups.
The board and staff encouraged moving forward with the new name and mascot as they prepare the school for opening.
