Board reviews audit checklist, fraud-hotline placement and governance training

During the Sept. 23 study session the board received a briefing on the district's annual audit assessment and internal controls. Staff explained the district completes a detailed checklist for the state auditor and uses a long-standing external audit firm that conducts a more extensive review than many peers.
The staff presentation noted existing safeguards (separation of duties, procurement controls) and said the district will add fraud-hotline links to individual school pages (in addition to the district site) so community members have clear reporting options. The administration also said it had invited community members with audit or accounting experience to sit on the audit committee to provide additional oversight.
Staff recommended, and the board discussed, a short governance training for new board members covering financial oversight and fraud-risk awareness; the training would take about 45 minutes and is required within four years but the board aims to complete it sooner as a best practice.
No formal audit action was taken at the session; staff said the auditors will present final audit results to the board when the review is complete.
