Lowell School Committee spotlights new career academy kitchen and student culinary program

The Lowell School Committee on March 5 highlighted a newly opened kitchen at the district’s career academy that officials said will expand hands-on learning and improve student engagement. Superintendent Skinner introduced the recognition and invited staff to describe how the kitchen strengthens vocational and academic outcomes.
School leaders said the kitchen was funded by a grant pursued over several years and credited committee member Jackie Doherty and a broad list of staff and partners for bringing the project to completion. "Without all of you, the kitchen would still just be an idea," Miss O'Loughlin said, thanking Superintendent Skinner, assistant superintendent Crocker Robarge, facilities and DPW staff, the career academy staff and students.
Presenters described the kitchen’s role in boosting graduation rates, integrating culinary work with math, science and English standards, and providing students with employable skills. The committee planned to show a short video created by Miss Myers illustrating students’ work; the video was not shown immediately because of an IT staffing issue.
Students demonstrated basic recipes and measurements and spoke about hands-on practice in culinary techniques, which presenters said also fosters community: "From gathering together to create cultural dishes to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month…we have seen students becoming engaged in ways we have never seen before," Miss O'Loughlin said.
Committee members praised the program’s potential to improve attendance and participation and requested that the video and additional documentation be made available to members and the public. No formal action was required; the committee moved on to other agenda items after the presentation.
