Summary
Council approved establishment of an Olympics advisory committee to prepare for LA 2028 and authorized a Business First working group to focus on Main Street economic development. Both committees will include council liaisons and at‑large members; application deadline is Feb. 20, 2026.
The Seal Beach City Council on Jan. 26 voted to establish two ad hoc advisory committees to prepare for LA 2028 and to advance local economic development.
Olympics advisory committee: Recreation Manager Tim Kelsey outlined LA 2028 event scale and local considerations, noting Long Beach will host dozens of events and that the council should plan for transportation, activation, visitor accommodations, marketing, safety and financing. Staff recommended two council members plus five community members; after discussion about representation and meeting logistics the council approved a substitute configuration allowing up to seven at‑large appointees (final substitute motion carried 4–1). Staff will advertise vacancies and set an application deadline of Feb. 20, 2026, with council consideration of appointments in early spring.
Business First advisory committee: Management Analyst Jennifer Robles presented the Business First proposal to create a working group focused on economic development — including a business concierge service, Main Street revitalization (a limited review of live entertainment regulations and franchise questions), and outreach to merchants. The council debated committee size and representation and ultimately adopted a substitute approach to allow each councilmember to nominate appointees so the committee will include two council liaisons plus at‑large appointments totaling up to seven members; staff recommended monthly meetings and an application deadline of Feb. 20, 2026.
Both committees will be Brown Act bodies. The council directed staff to advertise the vacancies, accept applications through Feb. 20, and return with appointment recommendations in early spring.
