Commission reviews standing rules, plans April officer elections and flags budget season

City planning staff brought a review of the commission’s standing rules to the Jan. 26 meeting as a heads-up and requested three specific items of feedback from commissioners: whether the current date and time for meetings remain appropriate, whether the chair's scripted announcements about public hearing expectations should be retained or revised, and whether to hold annual elections for chair, vice chair and secretary in April as the document suggests.
Elliot told the commission the standing-rules document contains guidance on chairperson announcements and the potential existence of committees but does not mandate committees. He noted the commission has not consistently elected officers each April since he joined the city staff and asked commissioners to raise any concerns before the commission’s April administrative actions.
Luke, attending remotely, apologized for his absence in person and reminded the commission that budget season and property-tax discussions are underway at the council level. "I would encourage any residents, commission members themselves to, you know, go to these council meetings, watch them on YouTube, and kind of participate in that process because that's where we can decide how property tax dollars get spent," Luke said.
No formal changes to the standing rules were made at the meeting; staff asked commissioners to submit feedback and signaled the plan to address officer elections and any administrative changes at the commission’s next applicable meeting.
