California State Assembly re-refers a slate of bills, honors two community members and sets Jan. 8 joint convention

SACRAMENTO — The California State Assembly opened its floor session on Jan. 5, 2026, re-referred a broad list of assembly bills to new committees by unanimous consent, observed two extended adjournments in memory and set a joint convention for the governor's State of the State address on Thursday, Jan. 8.
The Clerk read the roll and, after procedural motions, Majority Leader Aguiar Curry sought unanimous consent under Assembly rules to re-refer multiple bills to different committees. By unanimous consent the Clerk read a slate of re-referrals that included AB 34 (Patterson), AB 37 (El Hawari), AB 52 (Aguiar Curry), AB 72 (Jackson), AB 230 (Ransom), AB 501 (Pappan), AB 634 (Jeff Gonzales), AB 647 (Mark Gonzales), AB 739 (Jackson), AB 763 (Ward), AB 874 (Abila Fadia), AB 883 (Loewenthal), AB 933 (Abila Fadia), AB 939 (Schultz), AB 946, AB 1060 (Avila Farias), AB 1070 (Ward), AB 1073, AB 1245 (Stephanie) and AB 1359 (Aaron). The re-referrals were presented pursuant to Assembly rule 96 and proceeded without objection.
The Assembly also approved, by unanimous consent, a request from the Majority Leader to suspend portions of the Assembly rules to permit Assemblymembers Sharp Collins and Ward to speak on adjournment-in-memory items and to allow certain guests to be seated on the floor.
The floor paused for memorial remarks. "Colleagues, today rise to adjourn in memory of Roman Reutas Vogelsang," Assemblymember Ward said in a floor statement recounting Vogelsang's service and ties to the Capitol community. Ward described Vogelsang's background in advocacy and policy work and asked the Assembly to adjourn in his memory. Later, Assemblymember Sharp Collins delivered an extended tribute to Pastor Glenn Arthur McKinney Sr., outlining his ministry in San Diego, his work with youth and seniors and his leadership at St. Stephen's Cathedral Church of God in Christ.
Other routine business included dispensing with the reading of the previous day's journal on a motion moved by Majority Leader Aguiar Curry and seconded by Ms. Sanchez. Leaders announced the Assembly's schedule for the coming days and said the chamber will convene at 10 a.m. and will hold a joint convention for the governor's State of the State address in the Assembly Chamber on Thursday, Jan. 8. Members were warned that increased security measures will be in place.
With no further business, Aguiar Curry moved and Ms. Sanchez seconded that the House stand adjourned until Thursday, Jan. 8, at 10 a.m.; the Speaker lifted the quorum call and the Assembly adjourned.
