Summary
Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague and council issued a World Hijab Day proclamation recognizing Feb. 1, 2026. Students and community organizers described the day as validation for Muslim women and invited residents to library events to promote understanding and inclusion.
Mayor Bruce Teague read a proclamation declaring Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026, World Hijab Day and invited community members to accept the recognition during the council meeting on Jan. 20. The proclamation framed the day as a celebration of religious freedom and the dignity of all residents.
Several young people and community leaders addressed council after the proclamation. Umni Ahmed, a senior at West High School, said the recognition ‘‘validates that women who look like me are valued’’ and described wearing the hijab as part of her faith and identity. A representative of the Mariam Girls Club said the proclamation ‘‘encourages dialogue, respect, and inclusion’’ and highlighted local events tied to the observance. Fatima, a 10th-grade student from Liberty High School and Merriam Girls Club member, told council the proclamation helps correct misconceptions about hijabi women and thanked officials for the visibility it provides.
An organizer noted the proclamation’s alignment with the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and described recent bullying incidents in local schools, urging the community to replace ‘‘ignorance with knowledge, fear with understanding, and hate with tolerance.’’ The organizer invited the public to World Hijab Day celebrations at the Iowa City Public Library and the Coralville Public Library on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
The council accepted the proclamation and recognized the youth and volunteers who attended. No formal action beyond the proclamation was required.
