Board hears MLK remembrance, honors retiring HR leader and student achievers

At the Jan. 26 meeting of the L'Anse Creuse Public Schools Board of Education, community members and students used the public comment and presentation portions of the agenda to highlight local history, individual contributions and student achievements.
Michael Lynch, a resident near Yacks Elementary, opened public comment by urging the community to treat Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy as a living civic responsibility rather than a historical footnote. "When we think about Martin Luther King's legacy, we don't want to just think about it as something out of a history book," Lynch said, urging reflection on segregation's continuing effects.
Kelly McDevitt, president of the L'Anse Creuse Education Association, offered an extended tribute to Mike VanCamp for decades of district service across roles including assistant principal, athletic director, principal and assistant superintendent for HR. McDevitt said VanCamp "approached this work with integrity, professionalism, and a deep sense of humanity." Several board members and students also offered thanks and presented gifts in recognition of his retirement.
The board also recognized student achievement and school leadership. The superintendent introduced student athlete Ava Knight, a L'Anse Creuse North sophomore who qualified for the Division 1 girls cross‑country state finals, noting she ran in the low 19‑minute range for the course. Representatives from LCN DECA and the student council — including Hamilton Ryan, Joe Csikszhi and Eva Yono — presented tokens of appreciation and thanked the board for support of student programs and activities.
Board members responded with thanks and congratulatory remarks. Several members noted Board Appreciation Month and expressed how meaningful the student presentations and gifts were to them as public servants.
