Summary
The committee advanced multiple ceremonial designation bills — including Overdose Awareness Day, Opioid Awareness Day, Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month, Korean American Family Month, Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day and Medal of Honor Day — and reported them to the Senate floor by voice vote.
The New York State Senate Finance Committee on Jan. 20 advanced a set of largely ceremonial designation bills and reported them to the Senate floor.
The clerk read a series of bills that the committee moved and approved by voice vote, including S487 (Fernandez) to designate Aug. 31 Overdose Awareness Day; S557 (Krueger) to designate May as Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month; S616 (Stavisky) to designate May as Korean American Family Month; S1688 (SCUFUS) to designate the fourth Thursday in March as Tuskegee Airmen Commemoration Day; S1811 (Fernandez) to designate May 9 Opioid Awareness Day; and House 3443 (Harcum) to designate March 25 Medal of Honor Day.
Several senators observed the limits of designation bills — one said they would prefer a year‑round focus on maternal mental health — and another expressed frustration that some measures, such as the Tuskegee Airmen designation, had not moved in the Assembly in prior years. Chair Liz Krueger said the Senate selected a group of noncontroversial bills early in the session to improve the chances of passage across houses.
Each designation bill was moved, seconded and reported to the floor during the short committee meeting. No substantive programmatic changes or fiscal impacts were attached to these designation bills during the session.
