Glen Ellyn SD 41 — On Sept. 16 the Glen Ellyn SD 41 Board of Education adopted its FY24–25 budget, which includes approximately $24,500,000 budgeted for construction of a full‑day kindergarten addition at Churchill Elementary and related capital costs.
Mr. De Porter summarized the budget to the board, noting that the $24.5 million for the kindergarten addition is being drawn from district fund reserves rather than debt. He said that including the project in this fiscal year’s budget produces a reported $19,000,000 deficit that is attributable to the capital outlay for the addition; without the kindergarten project the district would show a surplus.
Superintendent Jeff emphasized that budget and operational plans will be shaped by upcoming community engagement: a full‑day kindergarten kickoff committee (a committee of the whole) will meet on Oct. 7, followed by three identical community feedback forums in October. Administration said it expects to finalize specific logistics — start times, transportation and registration timing — and communicate registration details in November and December for January enrollment.
The budget also includes approved technology and summer project spending; staff described a five‑year capital and technology plan intended to stagger major expenditures (network switch replacements, projectors and HVAC work) to avoid clustering high‑cost items in the same year. The board moved and approved the budget by roll call following the public hearing earlier in the meeting (the public hearing produced no speakers at the time it was held).
Next steps: The board will hold a public hearing next month on required fund transfers connected to capital funding and will seek a vote on those transfers in October; administration will continue community engagement on the full‑day kindergarten schedule and registration plan.
