Riverside County adopts 2025 fire code updates to boost resiliency and insurability

Riverside County presented a three‑year cycle update to its local fire code Dec. 9, proposing adoption of language from the 2025 California Fire Code and the 2025 California Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Code with local modifications. Fire Department staff said the changes include additional water requirements in WUI areas, expanded landscape mitigation and construction requirements aimed at qualifying communities for state or insurer risk‑reduction listings.
Assistant Fire Marshal Kylie Tillamook described the revisions as targeted at reducing wildfire risk and noted that many developers are already implementing similar standards. Staff also referenced intent to have the county included on a fire risk reduction community list, which they said would “double guarantee” insurability with several insurers for affected developments.
The board opened and closed the public hearing with no public speakers and adopted the ordinance (referred to in the presentation as Ordinance No. 787.11) as recommended by staff, with a 5–0 vote.
Next steps: staff will publish the ordinance summary as required by local law and direct the Clerk to file the associated notice of exemption in the State Clearinghouse as described in the staff memo.
