Madera reports big turnout for holiday events; staff seeks donor support for summer concert series

Nick Salinas, District 3 chief of staff, gave a report on recent community events and volunteer support and asked the board for direction on 2026 programming and funding. Salinas said the tree‑lighting effort used roughly 8,000 feet (about 8,000 lights) and that the tree reached about 105 feet when fully hoisted. "We also ordered a lot of lights. In total, we had 8,000 feet of lights and, total of 8,000 lights," Salinas said.

Salinas credited partnerships with Elevate Madera, Maldonado Brothers (tree shaping) and county maintenance staff (provided power and logistics). He said community turnout for the parade and park events was strong and that volunteer groups (including a high‑school team) contributed to setup. He requested direction on themes, frequency and funding for 2026 events and reported ongoing conversations with a major private donor expected to materialize within 30 days.

Board members supported continuing the Friday‑night event series and discussed testing increased frequency (from once a month to possibly twice a month) and establishing a summer concert series (May–September) contingent on donor funding. Several members emphasized the need to secure sustainable funding for performers, restroom facilities, lighting and security, with contractor and nonprofit volunteers warning that in‑kind capacity was strained. "Without funding, you get nothing done," said Jeff Barajas, a local general contractor who has helped coordinate events through a new nonprofit.

The board agreed to keep ad hoc event coordination in place, asked staff to follow up with the major donor conversations, and to return with logistics and sponsorship plans for a potential 2026 summer concert series.
