Ursula Jones Dixon sworn in as Alameda County district attorney

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 18 formally appointed Ursula Jones Dixon as the county’s district attorney and administered the oath of office.

The board made the appointment by roll call vote; Supervisors Marquez, Tam, Fortunato Bass and President Halbert voted aye and Supervisor Miley was excused. Associate Justice Charles Smiley of the California First District Court of Appeal administered the oath.

In brief remarks after the swearing‑in, Jones Dixon thanked family members and colleagues and addressed the scope of the work ahead. ‘‘I’m a fix it. I’ll make that promise to you,’’ she said, asking the public and elected officials for patience as she assesses office needs and rebuilds trust.

Background: The board ran a public, multi‑stage selection process that included applications, public meetings and interviews earlier this year; the County Administrator reported the board had unanimously selected Jones Dixon at a Jan. 28 special meeting and had directed staff to coordinate transition details. The Administrator recommended a formal appointment effective Feb. 18.

Public response: Several members of the public — including community leaders, former judges and supporters who had worked with Jones Dixon in juvenile and family court — spoke during the meeting to praise her experience and to encourage the board’s selection.

What’s next: County staff and the new District Attorney’s office will coordinate transition steps, including administrative onboarding and any immediate operational priorities; the County Administrator had previously indicated the effective date of appointment would be Feb. 18, 2025.
