Brighton approves 21 civic events for 2026 after discussion of Stars Hollow size and fees

Brighton City Council approved 21 civic event applications for 2026 after staff and council discussed event size, safety plans, and fees.
Assistant to DPS Director Patty Thomas told council the city received 21 applications, all but one repeats from prior years, and identified a new two-mile walk by Malachi's House of Hope to raise awareness about heterotaxy. "There's a new walk... Malachi's House of Hope... they're gonna be doing a 2 mile walk, for heterotaxy awareness," Thomas said.
Councilmembers questioned whether the multi-day Stars Hollow event might be too large for the downtown and asked for more detail on how the city manages large crowds. Thomas said the Friday night portion is a limited VIP component and that last year the applicant met event requirements; Chief Procter said the event ran smoother than previous years after organizers incorporated public-safety suggestions, noting close coordination with fire and other partners.
Council also asked about the city's cost breakdown for event services. Thomas said the event policy was revised to adopt a flat 50% pass-through charging model and removed previous line-item examples; she identified two for-profit events on the list: Cinco de Mayo and Stars Hollow.
Councilmember Schmick moved to approve the 21 civic events; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Gardner and passed by voice vote.
Thomas agreed to include DDA concert dates on the city events posting so residents can find all community concerts in one place.
