The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education on Jan. 26 adopted a safe firearm‑storage resolution and unanimously reaffirmed its policy supporting immigrant, refugee and undocumented students and families.
Board member Mosner Feltham introduced the safe‑storage resolution, which the board read into the record and then voted to adopt. Feltham said the measure "is an action we can take to prevent gun death of young people in our community," and cited national and state statistics about youth deaths and school shootings. The resolution directs MMSD to develop and implement an annual comprehensive strategy to promote safe firearm storage, including outreach such as direct mailing, student collaboration and an option for households to affirm safe‑storage practices at enrollment.
Earlier in the meeting, the board moved to reaffirm an existing resolution pledging that "every Madison Metropolitan School District site is a safe place for its students and their families to seek help, assistance, and information" if faced with fear about immigration enforcement. The reaffirmation cites Plyler v. Doe (1982) and states district staff "shall not inquire about or record students or a family member's immigration status" except where required by law, and that requests from immigration agents be routed to the superintendent and general counsel for review. President Nichols read the motion and the board adopted it unanimously.
Student advocates and March for Our Lives club members who had helped bring the safe‑storage item forward addressed the board during the public comment period, thanking members for considering the resolution and urging continued action. Board members thanked student advocates and staff who supported the two measures.
The board recorded the two votes during the early portion of the Jan. 26 meeting; both motions were adopted and entered into the minutes for the regular meeting dated 01/26/2026.
