Pipestone County approves tentative contract for school resource officer through 2025–26 school year

Pipestone County commissioners on Sept. 24 moved forward on a two-year, intergovernmental agreement to provide a school resource officer to the Pipestone Area school district.
Sheriff’s office staff presented a tentative agreement calling for a county charge to the district of $57,750 for the 2024–25 school year and $61,215 for 2025–26. Commissioners compared those figures to last year’s charge (about $51,025) and were told the increase is primarily driven by rising labor costs and negotiated salary increases. Deputy Brian Danks is the officer currently assigned to the district and told the board he is willing to continue in the assignment.
Board members emphasized the value of the resource-officer program and the relationships the officer builds with students and staff. One commissioner noted the difficulty of measuring daily presence but said the officer’s flexible duties and trust with students justify the investment.
The county board approved its portion of the agreement by voice vote; the transcript records that the item still requires the school board’s formal approval before the contract is fully executed.
