Blue Earth County approves fiber connection to Ponderosa Landfill with $60,000 buildout
Summary
The board authorized a contract for fiber to the Ponderosa Landfill: a one‑time buildout of $60,000 and a 36‑month service at $600/month (approximately $82,000 total). The connection is for county operations; individual residents could negotiate separate connections with the vendor.

County staff moved to contract with Consolidated (vendor name provided in packet) to install fiber to the Ponderosa Landfill. Staff (Carrie) said the landfill previously relied on a single DSL line and that the county has expanded on‑site equipment (security cameras, printers and other devices) that exceed existing throughput. The proposed contract includes a one‑time buildout of $60,000 and a 36‑month service term at $600 per month, for a total project cost the presenter approximated near $82,000.
Commissioners asked whether the new line could be used to extend service to nearby residences; staff replied the initial installation will be a direct line to county equipment, but third parties or residents could make separate arrangements with the vendor and would likely pay their own connection costs. The board moved, seconded and approved the contract by voice vote.
Staff will execute the contract and coordinate installation and operations with the vendor and landfill management.
