Sheriff’s office offers holiday tips to curb 'porch pirate' thefts in Calaveras County

During Taxpayer Alert, Lieutenant Greg Stark discussed seasonal increases in package thefts and offered practical steps residents can take to reduce risk. "If you know you're getting a package and you can't be home, ship it to somebody or let somebody know that it's coming," Stark said.
He recommended delaying deliveries, arranging pickup with a trusted neighbor, breaking down boxes to hide contents, turning on motion‑activated lights and avoiding visible packages in vehicles. On cameras, Stark said image quality limits identification: cameras can help if they capture readable license plates or identifiers, but low‑quality footage or a masked suspect will limit usefulness.
Stark emphasized layered precautions rather than reliance on a single measure and urged awareness when walking to vehicles or leaving packages unattended.
