Staff presented three sign options developed by Blue Zones. Commissioners raised concerns about visual consistency with an upcoming citywide signage program and about enforcement responsibility; staff clarified that municipal code already prohibits smoking and that parks staff will focus on education and signage rather than enforcement.
After discussion, commissioners directed staff to ask Blue Zones to combine preferred elements (the panel chose a mix of option 1 and the squiggly/bottom element of option 3), add a clear English and Spanish 'No smoking. No vaping.' line, and return with mockups. "It just needs to say no smoking. No vaping," a commissioner said during debate. The motion passed by roll call (7–2).
Staff noted signs will be temporary and removable so they can be replaced when the city's full signage program is developed. The commission recorded the vote and instructed staff to coordinate with Blue Zones on placement and consistency with other wayfinding work.
