Assembly proclaims October Filipino American History Month, adds 63 coauthors

The California State Assembly on Aug. 20 adopted House Resolution 65 to recognize October as Filipino American History Month. Assemblymember Kolozah, the author, framed the resolution as honoring Filipino contributions to California’s labor movement, public service and civic life.
Kolozah and numerous colleagues recounted historical milestones — from early Filipino labor organizing to Filipino service in World War II and leadership in labor and government. Senator Christopher Cabaldon joined the Assembly floor as a guest in support; the resolution emphasizes Filipino Americans as a vital part of California’s workforce and cultural heritage.
Supporters across caucuses — including Latino, AAPI, LGBTQ and labor allies — highlighted contemporary contributions in health care, education and public service. Assemblymember Bonta said the resolution recognizes legacies “that are central to our history and our future,” while others pointed to local festivals, monuments and community institutions as examples.
The Assembly added 63 coauthors without objection and adopted the resolution by voice vote. The measure is commemorative and encourages recognition and celebration during October; it does not create new state programs or appropriations.
