The Alameda County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation on March 11 recognizing March for Meals and the county’s senior nutrition providers, with remarks from Jennifer Stevens, director of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA), and representatives of local providers.
"Food is medicine," AAA Director Jennifer Stevens said, describing the program’s role in helping older adults maintain health, independence and connection. Stevens said county nutrition programs and partners provide over 600,000 home-delivered meals and more than 140,000 congregate meals annually, serving approximately 11,000 older adults across Alameda County.
Representatives from SOS Meals on Wheels and Spectrum Community Services described volunteer needs, the role of congregate meal sites, and the programs’ contribution during emergencies such as shelter-in-place. Supervisors praised the providers’ wellness checks and community reach, and emphasized local funding gaps and the importance of city reimbursements covering full costs.
The board presented the proclamation, took photos with providers, and adjourned to closed session to continue the day’s business.
Next steps: the board encouraged continued support for the AAA and local meal providers and noted opportunities to expand partnerships and local funding.
