The Alameda County Board of Supervisors proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Oct. 7 and presented proclamations to local advocacy groups and service providers.
District Attorney Ursula Jones Dixon accepted a proclamation on behalf of the District Attorney's Office and highlighted the county Family Justice Center and interagency work to support survivors. In her remarks she emphasized survivor-centered prosecution and services and invited supervisors and the public to a Day of Remembrance event later in October.
A representative of SAVE (Safe Alternatives to Violent Environments) thanked the board and urged community participation in a candlelight vigil in Fremont. Christine Dillman, Executive Director of Tri Valley Haven (joining online), thanked the Board for a $2,000,000 county contribution to rebuild a confidential shelter in Livermore, said Tri Valley Haven has obtained a building permit from the city of Livermore and signed a construction contract, and said the new shelter will serve roughly 50% more survivors and children by next fall.
"Survivors aren't alone and justice will not rest," District Attorney Ursula Jones Dixon said during her remarks. The board received no public speakers on the proclamations and accepted the presentations with applause.
No county policy action or funding appropriation beyond previously authorized contributions was decided at this meeting; Tri Valley Haven and SAVE staff outlined continuing partnerships with the DA's office and other county services.
