Genola council lowers north-end Main Street speed limit after traffic counts

The Genola Town Council voted to lower the posted speed limit on the north end of Main Street after members reviewed radar-trailer traffic counts and discussed additional calming measures.

Councilman Jackson presented data showing that during a September–October monitoring period 6,609 vehicles passed the trailer and about 63% were over the posted limit (cited by the council as a baseline) and that a 3‑week July sample recorded 4,243 vehicles with 12% exceeding the limit (SEG 1211–1219; SEG 1231–1243). Jackson recommended setting a 30 mph limit from 8th North to the 2400 block (near the new subdivision) as a first step and exploring additional measures such as speed humps.

After discussion about where the 30 mph zone should start and end and whether to add physical traffic-calming measures, Jackson moved to lower the speed limit as recommended; Grant Lundberg seconded the motion. The council approved the change by voice vote. Councilmembers said they would monitor results and, if speeding continued, consider next steps like speed humps or other calming infrastructure.

The council emphasized pedestrian and student safety near bus stops and residential areas as a primary justification for the change and noted a preference for consistent speed limits to create driver expectations. The council did not specify an implementation date in the discussion recorded at the meeting; staff will follow up on signage and coordination with any necessary county or state road authorities.
