Memorial Elementary students tell Highlands County School Board about 'resilience'

Students from Memorial Elementary School presented a short program on the character trait they have been studying—"resilience"—at the Highlands County School Board meeting on Jan. 29.
Vice Principal Mike introduced the group and invited several students to define resilience and give examples. Students used age-appropriate language to describe resilience: "Resilience means being strong on the inside," "It means not giving up when something is hard," and "Resilience is when I fall down, get back up, and keep going." They also shared what they love about their school, naming specials, staff and activities.
Board members and attendees thanked the students and teachers for the presentation. Several board members said they appreciated seeing students participate and linked the character work to broader goals: "It actually is how resilient are you. Are you willing to get in and fall forward?" one board member said in response to the presentation.
The board's acknowledgement of the students preceded routine business and formal votes later in the meeting.
