City OKs $1.5 million in 4B funds for Hamilton Park Tennis Center upgrades

The Wichita Falls City Council on Jan. 20 approved a $1.5 million allocation from the Type B (4B) sales tax corporation to support planned renovations at Hamilton Park Tennis Center.
Michael Turner, director of tennis at Fallstone Courts, described a proposal that would add four indoor courts, a redesigned entry plaza, an expanded pro shop and parking improvements to make the facility eligible to host more regional and national tournaments. Turner said the total project cost is about $5.5 million, with roughly two-thirds expected from private fundraising; 4B will provide $750,000 in the current budget year and $750,000 next year.
City staff and council members noted the tennis community's fundraising success and the projected economic return. Turner and supporters told the council the upgrades would allow the city to bid for USDA, UIL and other tournament events and estimated initial annual economic returns in the millions.
The council approved the 4B budget amendment by voice vote and encouraged continued private fundraising and coordination with the project team.
