KINGMAN, Ariz. — The Heritage Preservation Commission recommended Jan. 27 that city staff investigate options to repaint and restore steam locomotive No. 3759 at Locomotive Park, exploring possible assistance from the Santa Fe Railroad, local contractors, and grant programs.
Commissioners reviewed the locomotive’s history: built in 1928 as a coal-burning northern-type steam locomotive, it carried passengers between Los Angeles and Kansas City and was donated to Kingman by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1957. The locomotive is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Parks staff said the last repaint was about 12 years ago and that prior work was done using store-bought paint; commissioners noted professional restoration could be expensive—staff referenced six-figure bids for full professional repainting. Commissioners suggested outreach to the railroad, local paint companies, and grant programs to help offset costs.
A motion was made and seconded to recommend the city look into repainting the locomotive and solicit potential partners and funding; the motion passed by voice vote. Commissioners also noted the forthcoming SHPO Route 66 grant opportunity and asked staff to consider whether the locomotive repainting might qualify.
