Commission OKs replacing downtown map faces with historical interpretation

KINGMAN, Ariz. — The Heritage Preservation Commission voted Jan. 27 to replace one face of the downtown intersection wayfinding signs—currently showing maps of businesses—with historic interpretive content.
City staff explained the signs installed with the Beale Street renovation have four faces; three faces already display historic "then and now" photographs while the fourth face shows a frequently outdated business map. Commissioners said static historical content would avoid frequent map updates and better highlight downtown heritage.
A motion to change the map faces to historic-event content was made, seconded and approved by voice vote. Public works will produce sign panels; staff said funds and materials can be provided in-house to implement the change.
Commissioners discussed keeping one map face in place in higher-need locations, and asked staff to prepare content that showcases archival photos and historically significant downtown events.
