Nantucket board backs Steamship Authority terminal feasibility study and welcomes new GM
Summary
Select Board and NP&EDC welcomed the Steamship Authority’s new general manager Alex Kriska and approved a joint letter supporting a federal BUILD grant application for a feasibility study of the Nantucket terminal at Steamboat Wharf to assess flooding, access and potential on‑site relocation.
The Select Board on Jan. 28 introduced Alex Kriska, the newly appointed general manager for the Steamship Authority, and approved a joint letter supporting a federal BUILD grant application to fund a feasibility study for the Nantucket terminal at Steamboat Wharf.
Rob Ranney, the town’s representative to the Steamship Board, introduced Kriska and said the authority looks forward to working with Nantucket officials. Planning and natural-resources staff described coordination with Caroline Muldoon (grant administrator for the Steamship Authority) on a BUILD grant application that would assess flooding impacts at the terminal, access improvements to the wharf and options for on-site terminal relocation. Staff said the project aligns with the town’s coastal-resiliency plan and is adjacent to other flood-mitigation work on Easy Street.
Select Board members moved and approved a letter of support by roll call; NP&EDC passed a parallel motion endorsing the joint letter. Planning staff said the grant would help analyze terminal operations and resilience and recommended coordination among the town, the Steamship Authority, environmental groups and ferry operators.
Kriska introduced himself to the meeting and asked for patience as he settles into the role; MassDOT and project presenters later invited input from Nantucket and island stakeholders regarding bridge and ferry coordination.
