The Nantucket Select Board voted Jan. 28 to approve an order of taking by eminent domain for a fee interest in 114 Orange Street for drainage and general municipal purposes, and separately authorized an award of damages in the amount of $64,005.63.
Real estate manager Tracy McDonald presented the request, saying the parcel (assessor's map 55 parcel 403) is a vacant marshland lot adjacent to Goose Pond Lane and required for stormwater, drainage infrastructure and a safe-passage bike path into town. McDonald said town counsel prepared the order of taking and that the appraisal supports the damage award.
During the public hearing, members of the public asked for maps and staff displayed location materials for clarity. The board closed the public hearing, moved to approve the taking and then separately voted to authorize the damages award; both votes carried unanimously by roll call.
McDonald said the town will coordinate stewardship and maintenance for the parcel with the Nantucket Islands Land Bank and use the parcel to support drainage infrastructure and coastal management needs in the area.
Vicki Marsh (town counsel or attorney Marsh as referenced) asked the board to take the separate vote to authorize the award of damages; that motion was carried by unanimous roll call.
