Mount Clemens marks 50th Santa Parade and honors clerk with Sunlight Award

The Mount Clemens City Commission on Oct. 20 recognized the 50th anniversary of the Mount Clemens Santa Parade and celebrated local volunteers who have kept the tradition running.
Mayor Laura Cropp read a proclamation noting that the parade began in 1975 and that volunteers and civic organizations such as the Mount Clemens Lions, Optimist Club, Rotary Club, Kiwanis and Mount Clemens Goodfellows have supported the event across five decades. Cropp specifically thanked organizers Eric Rick and Michelle Weiss and said she would present them with framed copies of the proclamation.
The mayor also announced that City Clerk Kathleen Martin will receive the Michigan Fair Elections Institute's Sunlight Award after an independent review of the qualified voter file found more than 10,000 potential duplicate registrations; the mayor said the city had sent over 800 emails to jurisdictional clerks to address the issue and noted that award recipients have reduced redundancies by an average of 86%.
Other community announcements included notices about holiday events (Tinsel Tour, Cherry Street Mall lighting and the Mount Clemens Santa Parade scheduled for Nov. 22) and local volunteer opportunities for the parade and other seasonal activities.
